Listen to Cory’s Shearwaters

From March to October, after dark and early in the morning, you can listen to the Cory’s Shearwaters, go and meet them or simply fall asleep under the sound of their vocalizations.

In March, the shearers return to the Azores, having spent all winter at sea in the Southern Hemisphere. They return home for breeding.

The Azores have a very important role in the world conservation of this species, receiving each year the largest population of Cory’s Shearwaters on the planet. At Morro de Castelo Branco this bird and its nests can be easily observed.

From Quinta da Meia Eira, you can walk to the Morro at night, and here you can observe these nests and listen closely to the colonies in great hustle. Or stay in the garden watching the stars and listening to their peculiar sound.

Note: Never point a flashlight directly at a nest!
